Don't Gamble
With Glaucoma
The second leading cause of blindness in the United States
and the leading cause of blindness in African-Americans, Glaucoma
is a chronic eye disease that causes 50% of the blindness seen
in African-Americans. If left untreated, Glaucoma causes a buildup
of pressure, damaging the optic nerve at the back of the eye.
The bad news is that sight loss to Glaucoma cannot be restored.
However, the good news is that the Bronx Eye Institute and Bronx
Diabetes Center offers complete early detection and treatment
procedures.
Who's At Risk?
As baby boomers begin to turn 50 years of age, they are at
a greater risk of developing Glaucoma. Also, people with a family
history of Glaucoma, and anyone afflicted with diabetes or extreme
nearsightedness and farsightedness, hypertension, or steroid
users should receive a thorough Glaucoma examination. Others,
once a year beginning at age 40. African-Americans should begin
annual screenings at age 35.

Loss of sight is preventable if treatment is started early
enough. With proper medication and advanced laser microsurgery,
Glaucoma can be successfully treated. Currently, there
are over a dozen different medications which help in the treatment
and management of Glaucoma. Laser and Glaucoma microsurgery
